Ten Reasons To Visit Rome In 2012
1. Architecture
Rome has been continuously inhabited since 1000 BC and succeeding civilizations have created many architectural wonders. One of the most famous and iconic is the Colosseum. This partially ruined structure is a testament to the outstanding architectural and engineering skills of the Roman people. Among many other architectural wonders, The Pantheon is not to be missed.
2. Visual Arts
With sometimes extraordinary and always impressive fountains; frescos, mosaics, paintings and sculptures, all from different periods, Rome houses a myriad of cultural treasures in impressive museums and galleries. Exhibitions will be mounted throughout 2012.
3. Performing Arts
There are performing arts activities all year round. Music is very significant: orchestral concerts take place in April 2012 and there will be a feast of classical events, including chamber and symphony concerts, in May 2012.
4. Mediterranean Climate
In the summer months, the relatively low humidity and warm breezes are very pleasant and there are lots of things to do and see. Car hire makes it easier to participate in many of the events and festivals, as well as to visit those places that are too far to reach on foot.
5. Religious Significance
Rome is a key destination for Catholics. On Ash Wednesday, February 22nd 2012, the Pope, flanked by his Cardinals, will walk to the Circus Maximus. The Vatican's St Peter's Basilica, partly designed by Michelangelo, has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world. In mid-April 2012 the Pope will bless the crowds in St Peter's Square, and from October to December 2012, a series of religious feasts are celebrated throughout the city.
6. Cuisine
The delicious Roman cuisine focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients that are simply prepared. Vegetables, meat and cheeses are highlights as, of course, is pasta. Food here is good all year round. Carlo Petrini founded the world-renowned Slow Food movement in 1986 in protest at the opening of a McDonalds near the Spanish Steps in Rome.
7. Sport
Rome has many sporting venues, including the Olympic Stadium, and there are tournaments of all kinds year round. There are major events in football (June 2012) and tennis (May 2012), and at the end of March 2012, sporting enthusiasts can follow the marathon and join the large crowds watching the runners as they run past many of the famous landmarks.
8. Cinema
The Cinecittà Studios is the largest television and film production facility in continental Europe. The centre of Italian cinema, a large number of today's biggest box office hits are filmed here. The Pesaro Film Festival in late June 2012 showcases the work of new directors and also presents classic films from many different countries. On August 5th, an open-air film festival will be held at Santa Maria.
9. Festivals
There are lots of festivals all year round. In early March 2012 travelers can join the Romans who celebrate the Festival of St Francesca by driving their cars to the Piazzale del Colosseo, close to the Church of Santa Francesca, for a blessing.
10. Spring and Summer Events
In early April 2012 the magnificent Spanish Steps - the widest stairway in Europe - are decorated with azalea plants, as part of the celebrations of Festa della Primavera. Celebratory events are held throughout July and August 2012, marking everything from the Fourth of July to observances in honor of the Virgin Carmine
